BAGHDAD - As a strong desert wind blows through Iraq, the capital city of Baghdad and the rest of the country become increasingly dry as the Sun slowly drifts across the horizon.
In the provinces to the north, and even in the empty, desert territory of the Kurdish region to the west, the rare, heavy rains of summer are becoming too sporadic to provide enough water to sustain the crops that Iraqis cultivate.
The winds also bring dust from the north. It covers the city's streets and, in large quantities, the dust can be dangerous. Hospitals across the city have reported increased numbers of people requiring medical treatment as a result of the dust.
But, in the city centre, in the heart of the Green Zone, the weather has little effect on the lives of ordinary Iraqis.
The area around the Green Zone is protected by a massive security cordon, and is patrolled by armed forces, police and private security forces.
The security cordon is home to about 25,000 government employees, but much of the area, some 1,200 hectares, is residential.
There are three main highways that criss-cross the district. The main road which cuts through the district is the Ring Road. The other main roads are the Baghdad Beltway and the Army Staff Road.
Both roads are encircled with checkpoints.
The checkpoints around the Ring Road are manned 24/7 by the security forces. The Ring Road is the only one that is motorised.
Beyond the checkpoints, there are military checkpoints on the roads.
Roads leading to the Green Zone are off limits to civilians. The streets in the district are patrolled by soldiers who stop and search civilians, sometimes for any reason.

Since the start of the ISF operation to liberate the city, tensions in Baghdad have been running high.
That is due to the military's checkpoints, and the frequency with which the armed forces are stopping civilians and detaining them.
